We remember when, as children, in our living room, in a sort of informal and unconscious search, we used household fabrics, sofas, and chairs (1) in the construction of impregnable castles and palaces suspended in the sky. A primitive way, we believe, to explore ourselves through imagination, and at the same time prepare ourselves, starting from the act of observation, to move consciously in the external world.
A circular process of inner-outer discovery that takes on meaning, on one hand, from the house outside, on the other hand, from the palace in the sky. A process that makes sense in that mutual tension between opposite worlds, dream-real, inner-outer, known-unknown, domestic- wild. Based on this principle, we approach the natural domain of Sources du Lac d’Annecy, an area unexplored and unknown to us, for which we interpret the children’s playhouse as a means to pause, observe, and know the essence of the place, and, we hope, bring some of it back home with us (2).
A rural-domestic shelter as a result of a cultural, geographical, and temporal mix: part house (Ca’), part shelter. (Banne)
What physically connects us to the ground on which the structure rests: a raised platform with double elevation. Its wooden structure lifts from the surrounding grassy ground, allowing us to perceive the entrance into a different space, subordinate to the landscape. It represents the carpet.
The uprights: the massive structural part, more imposing, devoted to supporting nevertheless the slender weight of the covering. Made up of wooden slats, they represent the chairs, the sofa.
The final and decisive element, also in relation to the children’s playhouse, the one that “encloses” and “protects”, is the covering sheet. Made of resistant and water-repellent material to fulfill protective functions, it is lightweight and rests above the uprights, to which it is properly fixed. Practical and multifunctional, just like a blanket.
